PRODUCT INFORMATION

Vetmedin Oral Solution for Dogs

Vetmedin Oral Solution is a prescription-only veterinary medicine containing pimobendan, licensed for use in dogs with heart disease.

It is used in the management of congestive heart failure caused by atrioventricular valvular insufficiency such as mitral valve disease, and in dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy.

Vetmedin may also be prescribed in certain pre-clinical stages of dilated cardiomyopathy where enlargement of the heart has been detected.

The oral solution formulation allows accurate dosing, particularly in small dogs or in patients where tablet administration is not suitable.

This product is a prescription-only veterinary medicine (POM-V) and can only be supplied against a valid veterinary prescription.

What Vetmedin Oral Solution is used for

Vetmedin Oral Solution is used to treat heart disease in dogs where the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively has been compromised.

Conditions commonly treated with Vetmedin include congestive heart failure caused by degenerative mitral valve disease and dilated cardiomyopathy.

These conditions may lead to signs such as coughing, reduced exercise tolerance, lethargy and fluid accumulation in the lungs.

Vetmedin helps support cardiac function and improve circulation when used as part of a veterinary treatment plan.

How Vetmedin works

Pimobendan works through two complementary mechanisms that support heart function.

First, it acts as a positive inotrope, meaning it increases the strength of heart muscle contraction. This helps the heart pump blood more effectively throughout the body.

Second, it acts as a vasodilator, relaxing blood vessels and reducing resistance to blood flow. This decreases the workload placed on the heart.

Together these effects help improve cardiac output and circulation in dogs with heart disease.

Administration

Vetmedin Oral Solution is typically administered twice daily approximately twelve hours apart, although the exact dosing schedule will be determined by the prescribing veterinary surgeon.

The solution is given using the graduated dosing syringe provided with the bottle, allowing accurate measurement based on the dog’s body weight.

This formulation is particularly useful for small dogs or for patients that struggle with tablet administration.

Monitoring during treatment

Dogs receiving treatment for heart disease require regular veterinary monitoring to assess heart function and response to therapy.

This may include physical examination, chest radiographs, echocardiography and blood pressure measurement.

Your veterinary surgeon will advise on the appropriate monitoring schedule for your dog.

Important information

Vetmedin should only be used under the direction of a veterinary surgeon and supplied against a valid veterinary prescription.

The dose, frequency and duration of treatment are determined by the prescribing veterinary surgeon based on the dog’s weight, clinical condition and response to therapy.

Further information including contraindications, warnings and potential side effects can be found in the product data sheet available here.
