PRODUCT INFORMATION

Semintra Oral Solution

Semintra Oral Solution is a prescription-only veterinary medicine used in the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats and dogs.

It contains telmisartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that helps protect kidney function by reducing protein loss in the urine and lowering pressure within the kidney’s filtering units.

Semintra is commonly prescribed as part of the long-term management of chronic kidney disease, particularly in animals with proteinuria, where excess protein is lost through the kidneys.

Semintra is supplied as a palatable oral solution that is administered once daily using the dosing syringe provided. The liquid formulation allows accurate dosing and can be given directly into the mouth or mixed with a small amount of food.

This product is a prescription-only veterinary medicine (POM-V) and can only be supplied with a valid veterinary prescription.

What Semintra is used for

Semintra is primarily used in the management of chronic kidney disease in cats and dogs. Chronic kidney disease is a progressive condition where the kidneys gradually lose their ability to filter waste products and maintain normal fluid and electrolyte balance.

In many cases of kidney disease, excessive pressure develops within the kidney’s filtration system. This can lead to leakage of protein into the urine, known as proteinuria, which can further damage kidney tissue over time.

Semintra helps reduce this pressure and decrease protein loss, which can help slow progression of kidney disease when used as part of a broader treatment plan.

How Semintra works

Semintra contains telmisartan, a medication that blocks the effects of angiotensin II, a hormone involved in blood pressure regulation and kidney function.

Angiotensin II causes constriction of blood vessels and increases pressure inside the kidney’s filtration units, known as glomeruli. Over time, this increased pressure can contribute to kidney damage and increased protein leakage.

By blocking angiotensin II receptors, telmisartan helps relax blood vessels within the kidney and reduce intraglomerular pressure. This can lower protein loss in the urine and support long-term kidney function.

Administration

Semintra is administered once daily as an oral solution using the graduated dosing syringe provided with the product.

The exact dose is determined by the prescribing veterinary surgeon based on the animal’s body weight and clinical condition. Treatment instructions will be printed on the dispensing label and should always be followed carefully.

Semintra is commonly used as part of long-term management for chronic kidney disease, although the duration of treatment will depend on the patient’s response and ongoing veterinary assessment.

Monitoring during treatment

Animals receiving treatment for chronic kidney disease usually require regular veterinary monitoring. This may include blood tests, urine testing, and blood pressure checks to assess kidney function and monitor response to treatment.

Your veterinary surgeon will advise on the appropriate monitoring schedule for your pet.

Important information

Semintra is a prescription-only veterinary medicine and should only be used under the direction of a veterinary surgeon.

The dose, frequency, and duration of treatment are determined by the prescribing veterinary surgeon based on the animal’s body weight, clinical condition, and response to therapy.

Further information, including contraindications, warnings, and potential side effects, can be found in the product data sheet available here.

Frequently asked questions

What is Semintra used for in cats?

Semintra is commonly prescribed for cats with chronic kidney disease, particularly when protein is present in the urine. By reducing pressure within the kidney’s filtering system, it can help reduce protein loss and support kidney function.

Is Semintra used for dogs as well?

Semintra may be prescribed for dogs in certain situations involving proteinuria or kidney disease. Your veterinary surgeon will determine whether it is appropriate for your dog’s specific condition.

How long do cats stay on Semintra?

Many cats remain on Semintra long term as part of ongoing management for chronic kidney disease. Treatment duration depends on the progression of the disease and the animal’s response to therapy.

Can Semintra be given with food?

Semintra can be administered directly into the mouth using the dosing syringe or mixed with a small amount of food if necessary. Your veterinary surgeon will advise on the best method for your pet.

Does Semintra cure kidney disease?

Chronic kidney disease cannot currently be cured. Treatments such as Semintra are used to help manage the condition and support kidney function as part of a long-term care plan.
