PRODUCT INFORMATION

Selgian Tablets for Dogs are a prescription-only veterinary medicine containing selegiline hydrochloride. Selgian is used for the treatment of behavioural disorders of emotional origin in dogs, including anxiety and depression.

Selgian may also be prescribed alongside behavioural therapy for dogs showing signs of emotional disturbance associated with behavioural conditions including separation problems, generalised phobias, overactivity and unsociable behaviour.

Selgian is available in 4 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg film-coated tablets, allowing your veterinary surgeon to prescribe the appropriate strength for your dog's bodyweight and individual requirements.

Selgian is a POM-V veterinary medicine and requires a valid veterinary prescription.

What is Selgian used for in dogs?

Selgian is licensed for the treatment of behavioural disorders of emotional origin in dogs. These include emotional disorders associated with anxiety and depression.

It can also be used in association with appropriate behavioural therapy for signs of emotional origin seen in behavioural conditions such as:

  • Anxiety in dogs
  • Depression and emotional behavioural disorders
  • Separation-related problems
  • Generalised phobias and fear-related behaviour
  • Overactivity
  • Unsociable behaviour

Emotional disorders in dogs can affect a wide range of normal behaviours. Changes may be seen in eating and drinking, sleep, exploratory behaviour, social interactions and self-stimulatory behaviour. Some dogs may also show fear- or irritation-related aggression or physical signs associated with emotional disturbance.

Behavioural problems can have many different causes, so your dog should be assessed by a veterinary surgeon before treatment. Where appropriate, Selgian may form part of a wider behavioural management programme rather than being used in isolation.

What does Selgian contain?

The active ingredient in Selgian is selegiline hydrochloride.

Selegiline is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Selgian is specifically authorised as a veterinary medicine for use in dogs with the behavioural and emotional disorders described in its product information.

Selgian strengths available

Selgian film-coated tablets are available in three strengths:

  • Selgian 4 mg Tablets – containing 4 mg selegiline hydrochloride per tablet
  • Selgian 10 mg Tablets – containing 10 mg selegiline hydrochloride per tablet
  • Selgian 20 mg Tablets – containing 20 mg selegiline hydrochloride per tablet

Please select the Selgian strength and quantity stated on your veterinary prescription. Do not change between strengths or alter your dog's prescribed dose unless instructed to do so by your veterinary surgeon.

How is Selgian given to dogs?

Follow the instructions provided by your prescribing veterinary surgeon and the dispensing label supplied with your medication. Do not alter the dose or frequency of treatment without veterinary advice.

How long do dogs take Selgian for?

Behavioural treatment with selegiline may be required for a prolonged period. The manufacturer's product information recommends a minimum treatment period of two months, based on clinical trial data, with treatment continued until the dog's clinical condition is stable.

If no clinical improvement is seen after two months of treatment, the product information advises that continuing treatment is unlikely to provide additional benefit. Your veterinary surgeon should assess your dog's response and advise you on the appropriate duration of treatment.

Do not change or discontinue prescribed medication without discussing your dog's treatment with your veterinary surgeon.

Selgian and behavioural therapy

For some behavioural conditions, Selgian is specifically licensed for use in association with behavioural therapy.

Medication may help manage the emotional component of a behavioural disorder, while an appropriate behaviour modification programme addresses the dog's responses, environment and learned behaviours.

Your veterinary surgeon or qualified veterinary behaviour professional can advise on an appropriate management programme for your individual dog.

Important information before giving Selgian

Selgian is not suitable for every dog and can interact with certain medicines. Your veterinary surgeon should be aware of any other prescription medicines, behavioural medications, supplements or other treatments your dog is receiving.

According to the manufacturer's product information, Selgian should not be administered:

  • To pregnant or lactating bitches
  • From the day before until the day after anaesthesia or tranquillisation performed using an alpha-2 agonist
  • At the same time as pethidine
  • At the same time as fluoxetine
  • At the same time as phenothiazines

The narcotic action of morphine may also be potentiated by Selgian.

This is not an exhaustive list of precautions or interactions. Please read the product information supplied with the medicine and speak to your veterinary surgeon if you have any questions about your dog's treatment.

Behavioural changes during treatment

The manufacturer's information notes that emotional disorders can sometimes mask underlying hierarchical conflicts. In some dogs, improvement of the emotional disorder may reveal previously latent aggressive behaviour.

If you notice a significant or concerning change in your dog's behaviour while taking Selgian, contact your veterinary surgeon for advice.

Can I buy Selgian for my dog without a prescription?

No. Selgian 4 mg, Selgian 10 mg and Selgian 20 mg are POM-V veterinary medicines and can only be supplied against a valid prescription issued by a veterinary surgeon.

You can obtain a written prescription from your veterinary practice and use it to order your dog's prescribed Selgian tablets from Vetalia.

Please make sure that the product, strength, quantity and dosing instructions on your prescription correspond with the medication you order.

Ordering Selgian online from Vetalia

Vetalia is a UK veterinary-led online retailer. Prescription orders are checked against the veterinary prescription before medication is dispensed.

When ordering Selgian for dogs online, select the strength and quantity prescribed by your veterinary surgeon and provide a valid veterinary prescription as part of your order.
