PRODUCT INFORMATION

Meloxidyl 1.5mg/ml Oral Suspension for Dogs

Meloxidyl 1.5mg/ml Oral Suspension for Dogs is a prescription-only veterinary medicine containing meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is licensed for the alleviation of inflammation and pain in both acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders in dogs.

Meloxidyl is supplied as an oral suspension in 10ml, 32ml and 100ml bottles. The liquid formulation allows the prescribed dose to be measured according to the dog's body weight using the dosing equipment supplied with the product.

What is Meloxidyl used for in dogs?

Meloxidyl contains meloxicam 1.5mg/ml, an NSAID with anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties. Meloxicam acts by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, helping to reduce inflammation and associated pain.

Meloxidyl is licensed for the alleviation of inflammation and pain associated with:

  • Acute musculoskeletal disorders - short-term conditions affecting muscles, joints and other components of the musculoskeletal system.
  • Chronic musculoskeletal disorders - longer-term conditions associated with inflammation and pain, including osteoarthritis where diagnosed by a veterinary surgeon.

Treatment must be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon following an assessment of the dog's condition, medical history and suitability for NSAID therapy.

Available Meloxidyl bottle sizes

  • 10ml bottle - Meloxidyl 1.5mg/ml Oral Suspension for Dogs.
  • 32ml bottle - Meloxidyl 1.5mg/ml Oral Suspension for Dogs.
  • 100ml bottle - Meloxidyl 1.5mg/ml Oral Suspension for Dogs.

All three presentations contain the same concentration of meloxicam (1.5mg/ml). The appropriate bottle size depends on the prescribed treatment and quantity authorised on the veterinary prescription.

How is Meloxidyl administered?

Meloxidyl is administered orally, either mixed with food or directly into the mouth using the supplied dosing equipment. The dose is determined by the prescribing veterinary surgeon and must be measured carefully.

The manufacturer's product information describes an initial treatment dose followed by a lower once-daily maintenance dose. Always follow the directions on the veterinary prescription rather than adjusting the dose independently.

Precautions and possible side effects

As with other NSAIDs, Meloxidyl may cause adverse reactions affecting the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys or liver. Reported adverse effects include reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, blood in the faeces and lethargy.

Meloxidyl should not be administered concurrently with other NSAIDs or glucocorticosteroids. Additional precautions apply to dogs with gastrointestinal ulceration, impaired renal, hepatic or cardiac function, dehydration or other conditions that increase the risks associated with NSAID treatment.

If adverse reactions are suspected, discontinue treatment and seek veterinary advice.
