PRODUCT INFORMATION

Galastop 50 micrograms/ml Oral Solution for Dogs contains the active substance cabergoline. It is a prescription-only veterinary medicine used in dogs for the treatment of false pregnancy, also known as pseudopregnancy or phantom pregnancy, and for suppression of lactation where clinically indicated by a veterinary surgeon.

False pregnancy is a common hormonal condition that can occur in entire female dogs following a season. Affected dogs may produce milk, mother toys, show nesting behaviour, become restless or anxious, and develop enlarged mammary glands. Although many cases resolve naturally, some dogs develop significant clinical signs that require veterinary assessment and treatment.

Galastop is supplied as an oral solution and should only be used under veterinary direction following appropriate assessment.

What is Galastop Used For?

Galastop is used in dogs for the treatment of false pregnancy and for suppression of lactation when this is considered clinically appropriate by a veterinary surgeon.

False pregnancy usually develops several weeks after a season and is linked to normal hormonal changes in the reproductive cycle. In some dogs, the signs can become severe enough to cause distress, discomfort or problematic milk production.

What is Cabergoline?

Cabergoline is a dopamine agonist. It acts by reducing prolactin secretion from the pituitary gland.

Prolactin is the hormone primarily responsible for milk production and plays an important role in the development and maintenance of false pregnancy.

By reducing prolactin levels, cabergoline helps resolve the clinical signs associated with pseudopregnancy and lactation.

Common Signs of False Pregnancy in Dogs

  • Nesting behaviour
  • Mothering toys or objects
  • Mammary enlargement
  • Milk production
  • Restlessness
  • Reduced appetite
  • Increased appetite
  • Behavioural changes
  • Whining or anxiety
  • Protective behaviour

Some dogs show only mild behavioural changes, while others develop marked mammary development, substantial milk production or significant distress.

When Might Treatment Be Recommended?

Many cases of false pregnancy are mild and may resolve without specific treatment. However, veterinary surgeons may recommend treatment when clinical signs are causing significant distress, when substantial milk production is present, or where suppression of lactation is clinically indicated.

Treatment decisions should always be based on individual clinical assessment.

Monitoring During Treatment

Dogs receiving treatment for pseudopregnancy should be monitored for improvement in behavioural signs, mammary gland enlargement and milk production.

Your veterinary surgeon may recommend further assessment if signs persist, worsen or recur.
