PRODUCT INFORMATION
Atopica Capsules for Dogs
Atopica Capsules are a prescription-only veterinary medicine used for the treatment of chronic manifestations of atopic dermatitis in dogs.
Atopica contains ciclosporin, an immunomodulatory medication licensed for use in dogs. It is commonly prescribed for the long-term management of allergic skin disease.
This product is a prescription-only veterinary medicine (POM-V) and can only be supplied against a valid veterinary prescription.
What Atopica is used for
Atopica is used in dogs with chronic allergic skin disease, particularly canine atopic dermatitis.
Atopic dermatitis is a long-term inflammatory skin condition caused by an abnormal immune response to environmental allergens such as pollen, dust mites or mould.
Affected dogs may experience persistent itching, skin redness, ear infections and recurrent skin infections. Long-term treatment is often required to control inflammation and maintain skin health.
How Atopica works
Ciclosporin works by selectively modulating immune responses involved in allergic inflammation.
It acts on specific immune cells known as T lymphocytes, reducing the inflammatory processes that contribute to allergic skin disease.
By regulating these immune pathways, Atopica helps reduce inflammation and control the clinical signs of atopic dermatitis.
Administration
Atopica capsules are usually administered once daily initially, although the exact dosing schedule will be determined by the prescribing veterinary surgeon.
After the condition is controlled, some dogs may move to a reduced dosing schedule based on veterinary guidance.
The capsules are typically given on an empty stomach to help optimise absorption.
Capsules may be supplied either as individual capsules dispensed from original manufacturer packaging or as full sealed manufacturer packs, depending on the option selected and the veterinary prescription.
Monitoring during treatment
Dogs receiving treatment for atopic dermatitis should be monitored by a veterinary surgeon to assess response to therapy and manage underlying triggers.
Management of allergic skin disease often includes parasite control, dietary assessment and treatment of secondary infections alongside medication.
Important information
Atopica should only be used under veterinary supervision and supplied against a valid veterinary prescription.
The dose, frequency and duration of treatment will be determined by the prescribing veterinary surgeon based on the dog’s body weight and clinical condition.
Further information including contraindications, warnings and potential side effects can be found in the product data sheet available here.
