Soliphen Tablets for Dogs

Soliphen Tablets are a prescription-only veterinary medicine used in the management of epilepsy in dogs.

Soliphen contains phenobarbital, an antiepileptic medication used to help reduce the frequency and severity of seizure activity in dogs diagnosed with epilepsy.

The tablets are available in multiple strengths, allowing dosing to be tailored to the individual patient based on body weight and clinical response.

Epilepsy treatment is typically long term and requires regular monitoring by the prescribing veterinary surgeon.

This product is a prescription-only veterinary medicine (POM-V).

What Soliphen is used for

Soliphen is used to manage seizure disorders in dogs, particularly idiopathic epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition where abnormal electrical activity in the brain leads to seizures. These episodes can vary in severity and frequency between individual dogs.

Antiepileptic medications such as phenobarbital are commonly prescribed when seizures occur repeatedly or when they significantly affect the dog’s quality of life.

The goal of treatment is to reduce the frequency and severity of seizures while maintaining a good quality of life.

How Soliphen works

Phenobarbital acts on the central nervous system to stabilise electrical activity in the brain.

It enhances inhibitory neurotransmission, helping to reduce excessive neuronal firing that can trigger seizures.

By increasing the brain’s seizure threshold, phenobarbital helps decrease the likelihood of seizure activity occurring.

Administration

Soliphen tablets are typically administered twice daily, although the exact dose and schedule are determined by the prescribing veterinary surgeon.

Regular dosing at consistent intervals is important to maintain stable blood concentrations of the medication.

Your veterinary surgeon will determine the appropriate dose based on your dog’s weight and response to treatment.

Monitoring during treatment

Dogs receiving phenobarbital therapy require regular veterinary monitoring.

This usually includes blood tests to measure phenobarbital concentrations and assess liver function, as well as clinical evaluation of seizure control.

Monitoring allows the veterinary surgeon to adjust the dose if necessary and ensure the medication remains both safe and effective.

Controlled drug information

Soliphen is a Schedule 3 controlled veterinary medicine.

A valid written prescription is required before supply. Prescriptions for Schedule 3 medicines are valid for 28 days from the date of issue and may only be dispensed once unless issued as an instalment prescription by the prescribing veterinary surgeon.

Prescriptions must be signed in ink by the prescribing veterinary surgeon and the original hard-copy prescription must be sent by post before the medicine can be supplied.

Instructions and the postal address for sending the prescription will be emailed after checkout.

In line with controlled drug governance requirements, Soliphen is supplied using enhanced handling and delivery procedures including signed-for delivery.
