Understanding Denamarin and Denamarin Advanced for Dogs and Cats
Denamarin is one of the most commonly used liver support supplements in veterinary medicine. It is widely recommended by vets for dogs and cats with elevated liver enzymes, chronic liver disease, gallbladder disease, and other conditions affecting liver function.
Denamarin® is a registered trademark of Nutramax Laboratories, Inc.

What is Denamarin used for?
Denamarin is a nutritional liver support supplement designed to help maintain normal liver function and antioxidant activity. It is commonly used in pets with:
- Elevated liver enzymes
- Chronic hepatitis
- Liver inflammation
- Gallbladder disease
- Pancreatitis affecting the liver
- Medication-related liver stress
- Age-related liver changes
Many pets remain on liver support supplements long term as part of an overall management plan alongside prescription medication, monitoring, and dietary changes.
What ingredients are in Denamarin?
The original Denamarin contains two key active ingredients:
SAMe (S-Adenosylmethionine)
SAMe helps support glutathione production, one of the liver’s most important antioxidants. It is widely used to help reduce oxidative stress within liver tissue.
Silybin
Silybin is the active extract from milk thistle and is commonly used for its antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties.
Together, these ingredients help support normal liver function and liver cell health.
What is the difference between Denamarin and Denamarin Advanced?
Denamarin Advanced is a newer formulation designed specifically for dogs. While both products support liver health, there are several important differences between the original Denamarin and Denamarin Advanced.
| Feature | Original Denamarin | Denamarin Advanced |
|---|---|---|
| SAMe + Silybin | ✔ | ✔ |
| Chewable tablet | ✘ | ✔ |
| Breakable tablet | ✘ | ✔ |

Why is Denamarin Advanced only for dogs?
Denamarin Advanced contains additional ingredients including beta-glucans, mannan-oligosaccharides, and a yeast-derived form of SAMe designed to improve bioavailability.
The Advanced formulation is currently intended for dogs only. Cats requiring liver support should remain on the original Denamarin formulation unless specifically advised otherwise by their vet.
How should Denamarin be given?
Denamarin tablets are traditionally recommended to be given on an empty stomach for optimal absorption. However, if necessary, they can sometimes be given with a small amount of food.
Denamarin Advanced tablets are chewable and designed to be easier to administer in dogs that struggle with tablets.
